Getting IPv6 from your LIR

Welcome to this new section of Beako Learn! This will explain the general process for getting IPv6 from your LIR or downstream service provider. The process varies slightly but in general it will follow this procedure.

Before you do this, you should know at least with regards to ripe there are two types of address space, Provider Allocated (PA) and Provider Independent (PI). To learn the differences between the two, please go read this page.

Once you've done that, the process is generally the same, besides informing your LIR which of the two you want. Write your provider an email or message asking for IP address space to be issued to you, and state if you want provider allocated or provider independent space. Once you've done this, you will also need to provide your ORG object and your MNTer.

After providing this, you will likely also have to provide your reason for needing IP address space. A /48 can be justified as 1 site (your home or office) usage. To obtain bigger blocks, like /44, /40, /36, /32 etc you will need to justify a specific amount of sites, hosting servers and assigning ranges to them etc. Basically you need to have a reason to obtain the space you are getting. Once you have this, provide it to your LIR and they will either issue you the space (If you are getting PA) or open a ticket with RIPE asking for them to assign you the IP space (PI). Once this process is completed, you will have a brand new range assigned to you!
